Honorable Mention Where Mermaids Come From M. Kathryn Black The sand bar breathes in afternoon heat. With trowel and pail I walk looking for air holes. The whine of a far off motor is a bee in my ear. I am heavy laden with clams. Using a short bladed knife, I pry a quahog open, find within a small sleeping baby-- a pale child with a fish tail, short iridescent green hair. I can't take her home; I know nothing about raising mermaids, for this is what she is. I splash out toward the shallows, sprinkle salt water on her tiny face. She wakes, stretches wee arms. I gently lower her shell into the waves, and she swims away, out of the harbor.
